Frequently Asked Questions About the Defiance Area Foundation

At the Defiance Area Foundation, we believe philanthropy is personal, and that giving back should be accessible, transparent, and rewarding. Whether you’ve just heard of us or you’ve supported our mission for years, you may have questions about what we do, how we operate, and how you can get involved.

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions we receive…from the “what” and “why” to the “how do I make a difference?”

What does the Defiance Area Foundation really do?

At our core, we help individuals, families, and organizations achieve their philanthropic dreams. We manage charitable funds, like Donor Advised Funds, Scholarships, and Legacy Funds, and use them to support nonprofits, community projects, and emerging needs across Defiance County.

Think of us as a bridge between donors and the causes they care about. We provide the structure, strategy, and stewardship to turn generosity into long-term community impact.

Where does the money come from? How are you funded?

Great question. The short answer: you.

We are funded by generous individuals, families, businesses, and organizations who create charitable funds with us. These gifts are invested and grown, allowing us to support community needs not just once, but forever.

Our operations are also supported by a 1% administrative fee on funds annually. Every dollar is stewarded with care, integrity, and a focus on local impact.

How do you decide who receives grants?

Our grants are awarded through a thoughtful, community-informed process. Each year, local nonprofits submit applications for projects, programs, or capital needs. These are reviewed by a grants committee made up of knowledgeable community members, Foundation staff, and sometimes even donors with designated giving goals.

We prioritize initiatives that:

  • Meet pressing community needs
  • Are sustainable and impactful
  • Align with the mission of our Foundation and fundholders

How can I learn more about initiatives like Clothes for Kids, Project 2030, or the Women’s Giving Circle?

We’re so glad you asked! These are just a few of the impactful initiatives we’re proud to support:

  • Clothes for Kids helps ensure local children have access to new, seasonally appropriate clothing, building confidence and removing barriers to learning.

  • Project 2030 is an exciting way for families to build their philanthropic legacy together. It’s about planting seeds now to grow a future of generosity.

  • The Women’s Giving Circle brings local women together to pool resources, build relationships, and support causes that matter to them.

You can find details and stories about these initiatives by visiting our Programs & Initiatives page or reach out to us directly. We would love to discuss how you can get involved or start your own fund.

How do I become a member of the Foundation?

Membership in the Defiance Area Foundation is more than a donation; it’s a commitment to shaping the future of Defiance County.

To become a member, you make a one-time donation of $1,000 and commit to an annual gift of $250. Members serve as ambassadors, advisors, and advocates. Many also serve on committees that help guide our work and impact.

What is Piggy Bank Philanthropy?

Piggy Bank Philanthropy is our fun, family-friendly campaign designed to introduce children to the joy of giving. Kids receive a piggy bank and are encouraged to save for a cause they care about. When they’re ready, they can share their giving story and inspire others to give too!
