Piggy Bank Philanthropy Stories: Small Acts, Big Impact

Piggy Bank Philanthropy continues to grow through the generosity of individuals, families, and students across our community. Each story reminds us that giving is not about the size of the gift, but the heart behind it.

From honoring loved ones to helping animals, supporting research, and strengthening local ministries, these stories reflect the many ways people are choosing to give back. Through Piggy Bank Philanthropy, participants are learning that even small amounts can create meaningful impact.

Greg and Karen Timmons

Greg and Karen Timmons, Piggy Bank Philanthropy Story

Greg and Karen Timmons raised $66.02 through their piggy bank and chose to give in honor of their late grandson, Paxton Jordan Schroeder.

Their donation supports the Sufficient Grace Ministries Memorial Fund at the Defiance Area Foundation, a fund created to support families who have experienced the loss of a baby.

“We decided to participate to raise money for our late grandson, Paxton Jordan Schroeder and the new fund at the Defiance Area Foundation—the Sufficient Grace Ministries Memorial Fund. Sufficient Grace Ministries is such a wonderful ministry to work with when you have lost a baby. They were so helpful when my daughter lost Paxton and it’s a great support system for people that need it.”

Their story is a powerful reminder that philanthropy can be deeply personal and rooted in love, remembrance, and support for others walking a similar path.

Brooke Figley

Brooke Figley PBP Story

Brooke Figley, a student at Ayersville Elementary, raised $60.01 with a mission to help other children.

She chose to donate her savings to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, inspired by a desire to support kids and families facing serious illness.

“I chose St. Jude Research Hospital because I want to help other kids and their families that are struggling with cancer or other sicknesses. As soon as I received the piggy bank, I began to collect loose change from anywhere I could find it. My dad helped me a lot because he gave me all his loose change every day. I also put some of my own money from my wallet in the piggy bank as well because I wanted to donate money to help too. I hope this helps someone get better!”

Brooke’s story shows that generosity can start at any age and that kids can make a meaningful difference when given the opportunity.

Laynee Pahl

Laynee Pahl PBP Story

Laynee Pahl, a student in Early Fives at Tinora Elementary, turned her daily chores into a way to give back.

Laynee used her savings to purchase food and treats for the Fort Defiance Humane Society, helping care for animals in need.

“I did chores around the house daily to earn money to add to my piggy bank to earn money for the dogs and cats at the Humane Society. Also earned money to buy the dogs and cats treats!”

Her story is a perfect example of how small, consistent efforts can turn into something meaningful for the community.

Defiance Area Foundation Staff

Piggy Bank Philanthropy is not just for children. During the Lenten season, staff at the Defiance Area Foundation participated as well, raising a total of $189.56.

Each staff member chose a cause meaningful to them:

These gifts reflect the many ways philanthropy can support education, food access, first responders, and children beyond our community.

Each of these stories is unique, but they all share a common theme: generosity in action.

Piggy Bank Philanthropy continues to show that anyone, at any age, can make a difference. Whether the gift supports a local pantry, a national organization, or a fund that will serve future generations, every contribution matters.

If you have filled your piggy bank and made a difference, we would love to hear your story.

Together, we are building a community rooted in generosity, compassion, and purpose…one piggy bank at a time.
