Since 1966, Fort Defiance Humane Society (FDHS) has stood as a compassionate, animal-advocacy organization in Defiance County. As the only shelter in the county that cares for dogs—along with cats and small pets—FDHS fills a vital role in our community. From rescuing the neglected to rehoming the unwanted, their mission is simple and powerful: protect and advocate for the animals who cannot speak for themselves.
FDHS is not county-owned or operated. Instead, they rely heavily on community support through donations, grants, and volunteers. This local nonprofit is the only one in the region with a Humane Agent on staff, responding to cases of cruelty, abuse, and neglect. Every animal taken in receives comprehensive care—from medical treatment and vaccinations to warm beds, daily enrichment, and ultimately, a path to a forever home.
But FDHS doesn’t stop there.
Through low-cost spay/neuter clinics, a community pet food pantry, and semi-annual TNR (trap/neuter/release) programs, FDHS actively works to reduce overpopulation and keep pets in loving homes—even when families face tough times.
To preserve their future and strengthen their ability to serve, the Fort Defiance Humane Society established a Donor Advised Fund with the Defiance Area Foundation. This fund allows donors to make long-term, meaningful investments in the continued care of local animals. With economic ups and downs affecting donations and grants, this fund ensures FDHS can keep their doors open and services running—no matter the climate.
The FDHS Donor Advised Fund is a lifeline for the community’s most vulnerable animals. Your support helps fund:
- Critical medical care and surgeries
- Daily care, supplies, and sanitation
- Educational programs and humane enforcement
- Volunteer and foster programs
- Low-cost services that support pet owners
Ways to Help:
- Donate – Monetary gifts allow the team to meet the most urgent needs.
- Give Supplies – Food, litter, cleaning items, and enrichment toys are always welcome.
- Volunteer – Spend time walking dogs, playing with cats, or helping with daily routines.
- Foster – Offer a temporary, loving home for animals in need of healing and care.
Every contribution—big or small—makes a difference. When you give to the Fort Defiance Humane Society Donor Advised Fund, you’re not just supporting an organization—you’re giving hope, health, and love to an animal in need.
Together, we can rescue the abused, love the abandoned, and build a more compassionate Defiance County.
